Assessment of Learning Outcomes Using a Mathematical Reasoning Concept Inventory
نویسندگان
چکیده
Undergraduate computer science students need to learn analytical reasoning skills to develop high quality software and to understand why the software they develop works as specified. This paper describes a systematic process for introducing reasoning skills into the curriculum and assessing how well the students have learned those skills. It presents a comprehensive Reasoning Concept Inventory (RCI) that captures the finer details of basic skills students need to possess (as a minimum) to reason about software correctness. Elements of the inventory can be taught at various levels of depth across the curriculum. This paper illustrates the use of the inventory over several iterations of a software engineering course and a development foundations course. It summarizes how learning outcomes motivated by the inventory lead to questions that in turn form the basis for a careful analysis of student understanding as well as for fine tuning what is taught.

The Outcomes of Ethics Education to Medical Students Based on Moral Reasoning Models
Introduction: For years, the importance of medical ethics education in medical schools has been emphasized but there is no consensus over learning goals yet. This study aimed to investigate the learning outcomes of medical ethics education based on models of moral reasoning. Methods: This study is a review using proper keywords in databases such as Medline, Web of Science, Scoupus, and Eric li...
متن کاملUsing a Concept Inventory to Assess the Reasoning Component of Citizen-Level Science Literacy: Results from a 17,000-Student Study†
After articulating 12 concepts for the reasoning component of citizen-level science literacy and restating these as assessable student learning outcomes (SLOs), we developed a valid and reliable assessment instrument for addressing the outcomes with a brief 25-item science literacy concept inventory (SLCI). In this paper, we report the results that we obtained from assessing the citizen-level s...
متن کاملAn Investigation in Mathematical Performance of Students Who Do Grade-skipping.
The main purpose of this study was to compare the performance of grade-skipped students with their peers in mathematical reasoning and applying. In this study, gender and mathematical self-concept were considered as effective variables. This study was a part of a longitudinal study. The data analysis was performed through repeated measurements and the results showed that in applying math conce...
متن کاملNeed to define and measure "learning outcomes" in medical education
Introduction: Learning outcomes are defined as what students get at the end of the training period. Outcome-based education approach focusing on determining, defining and assessing learning outcomes is one important tool in the improvement of the quality of learning in medical education in the most developed countries. According to importance of this approach, this study intends to introduce th...
متن کاملClinical reasoning assessment through medical expertise theories: past, present and future directions
Exploration into the concept of "medical expert" dates back to more than 50 years ago, yet yielding three leading theories in the area of clinical reasoning, namely, knowledge structure, hypothetic-deductive, and dual process. Each theory defines “medical expert” in a dissimilar way. Therefore, the methods of assessment through which the experts are identified have been changed during the tim...
